This was a hot discussion topic last night.... just thought i'd share
Three gold prospectors wanted to rent a room for the night at the Yosemite Hotel. The clerk told them that the room would cost $30.
Each man gave the clerk $10, and he gave them the key to the room.
After they left, the clerk checked in his book and realized that he had overcharged them, and that the room was really only $25. He called the bellboy to his desk and told him what had happened and then sent him with $5 to give the men their refund (five one dollar bills).
On the way there, the bellboy decided that since he couldn't divide the $5 evenly among the three men, he would give each of them $1 and pocket $2 for himself. So when he got to the room he gave each man $1. [are you still with me?]
This meant that each man had now paid $9 instead of the original $10. The bellboy had $2 in his pocket.
Now let's total all this money:
Three times $9 (3x9) is $27.
Add the $2 the bellboy pocketed (27+2) and you now have $29.
What happened to the other dollar?
